Improving the Safety of Rebar Cages using Innovative Connectors


This research project is aimed to provide practical engineering processes for design and site handling of pile shaft and slurry wall rebar cages that are commonly used for foundations of high-rise buildings and bridges. The goal is to develop guidelines that can eliminate the failure possibility of rebar cages and enhance safety at the construction site, for both foundation and above grade elements.

Innovative mechanical connectors, such as U-bolts, wire rope connectors, and similar, will be used at strategic locations along the rebar cage in lieu of tie wires. These reliable connections will increase the stiffness and strength of the rebar cage, and thus, increase construction productivity, improve safety, and reduce construction cost.
