On June 10th-14th, 2019, the Manufacturing Camp was held at the University of Nevada, Reno supported by the 2019 Engineering Camp. The purpose of the Manufacturing Camp was to engage the high school students in engineering learning, particularly in manufacturing. The goal was to educate the students about manufacturing and encourage them to take up engineering as their carrier. A total of eight high school students have attended the camp. During this manufacturing camp, the students were exposed to manufacturing in engineering through the lecturer delivered by the experienced faculty members, lab demonstrations, and hands-on experiments.
Dr. Pradeep Menezes, a faculty in Mechanical Engineering and expert in Tribology, manufacturing, and materials, delivered lectures about manufacturing and the importance of tribology in manufacturing. The tribology lab demonstration for students was conducted to make sure students appreciate the importance of tribology in manufacturing. Dr. Pankaj Kumar, an expert in Additive Manufacturing and faculty in the department of chemical and materials engineering, deliver the lecture about the advanced manufacturing techniques, including Additive Manufacturing. Various aspects ranging from design, materials, and techniques were discussed. The lecture was followed by the lab demonstration to show the state-of-art equipment that are used for advanced manufacturing. The attendees shared opinions, thought, and suggestions during the lab demonstration. These activities clearly indicated the interest of students in engineering. The students gave presentations on what they have learned during the camp.
The students also interacted with the engineering companies’ representatives to understand the actual engineering company and how it operates and designs real-world products. Towards the end of the camp, students took part in the design and manufacturing of spin competition. The goal was to design the top that can spin for a long time. This manufacturing camp for high school students was a successful event and would enable them to create a large manufacturing force in Nevada.
Dr. Menezes is participating in the summer manufacturing camp since 2017.
